BACKGROUND
According to the biggest
cybercrime study every conducted, the global cost of cybercrime is more
than four times the cost of America's drug epidemic. And with crimes like
identity theft now claiming more than 700,000 victims each year, the problem
is only getting worse.
We believe that because cybercrime touches every part
of our community - our homes and our kids, our big businesses and small
firms, our schools and our government - we can only confront it as a community.
Why Think Security First?
Security experts agree that the key to cyber security
for every computer user is awareness. And the key to awareness is education.
Security awareness means thinking about security before
we use a computer, before we open an e-mail attachment, and before we
create a password. Security awareness also
means thinking about security before we buy or install a new technology,
use our credit cards, or reveal any personal information to strangers.
The city of Walnut Creek is committed to providing free
security awareness education to every household, every business, and every
school in the city through a long-term program of free security kits,
workshops and seminars
Our hope is
that armed with the right information, and reminded constantly about the
need to Think Security First!, our community will become more aware, more
vigilant, and ultimately a better place to live, work, and learn. |
