ABOUT WALNUT CREEK
The city of Walnut Creek is one of the most progressive and technically
advanced small cities in America. It's located in the San Francisco
East Bay, a region recently recognized as the most connected broadband
community in America. The city is just 30 minutes from downtown San Francisco,
40 minutes from Napa wine country, and 50 minutes from the heart of Silicon
Valley.
With a population of 62,000 and supporting 7,000 local businesses, Walnut
Creek was selected as "the most livable small city in the Nation!" by
the National Conference of Mayors. The San Francisco Chronicle described
Walnut Creek as "hip" and "a happening place," adding "it's got a more
modern developed downtown than anywhere else in the country."
Walnut Creek is a city of contrasts. Despite being a technology and business
leader the city has maintained and nurtured its small town atmosphere.
Nestling at the foot of Mount Diablo State Park, a 20,000-acre wilderness
that boasts 150 miles of hiking trails, the city has more than 1,700 acres
of open space, and 11 public parks, out of which have grown many world-class
technology leaders like PeopleSoft and CommerceOne.
The city is also one of the first in the nation to be wired with the
Ricochet wireless network to enable computer users to wirelessly access
the Internet from any point in the city.
Walnut Creek is also the first city in America to host a Cyber Security
Day. The free one-day security awareness event on November 2002 attracted
more than 750 local business owners who enjoyed an agenda of free security
seminars and boot camps.
The event attracted some of the nation's top security experts including
Kevin McKean, editorial director of PC World; Joe Grand, former member
of legendary hacking think-tank L0pht; Jordan Ritter, co-founder of Napster;
and representatives of the FBI InfraGard program.
