OVERVIEW
In 2002 President Bush called on very citizen in America to play their
part in making cyberspace more secure. The City of Walnut Creek has responded
to this call by making cyber security our key focus for 2003 and beyond.
The City has created a series of education and awareness programs that
will be launched throughout 2003 and all sharing a common and important
theme - Think Security First!
Our goal is to help every resident and homeowner, teacher and student, business owner and
employee to protect themselves from cybercrime, and in turn help protect
our city and our country from its devastating effects.
Our plan is to provide a broad range of security education and awareness
tools and services to help every computer user learn how to protect their
corner of cyberspace, and these are just some of the initiatives you can
expect throughout the year:
-
Households, businesses and schools will receive a free cyber security
kit to help improve their security education, awareness, and preparedness.
The kit will include awareness posters, screensavers, stickers, and
handbooks.
-
The city has created a cyber security web portal offering
expert security advice, assistance, and answers free of charge.
-
A newly-appointed Identity Theft Officer will provide facts
and information on preventing ID theft, as well as a place to report
it and help for victims.
-
A security task force has been created, comprised of business,
technology, and security leaders, to provide a forum to share security
knowledge and resources.
-
A series of industry-specific security forums is being organized
to enable sectors in the medical, financial and other communities
share their experiences and information.
-
A 20-minute security awareness video/DVD will be offered free
of charge to homes, schools, and businesses.
As a city this is
our chance to create a cyber security blueprint that every city and community
in America can adopt as a response to cybercrime.
As a citizen it's
your opportunity to defend your family, your community, and your country
against this growing threat.
Find out what we're doing for residents,
small and midsize businesses, large
enterprises, schools, and local
government.
